This Week's Opposition: Charlton Athletic

Pompey Live host Jake Smith takes a closer look at The Addicks, Portsmouth's next challenge in the Championship.

The Blues had to settle for a point against QPR after a frustrating second half at Fratton Park on Boxing Day and it’s PO4 we go back to for Pompey’s final match of 2025 - Charlton Athletic the opponents.

MANAGER

The Addicks are managed by former Luton Town and Southampton boss Nathan Jones, who took to the helm in February 2024.

Jones took the South London side to the League One Play-Off Final in his first full season in charge - They won the match by a goal to nil against Leyton Orient to achieve promotion to the Championship, returning after a 5-year absence.

The 52-year-old has a win percentage of 45.36 from 97 matches in charge of The Addicks.

ONE TO WATCH

On this occasion, our player to keep a close eye on is Conor Coventry.

The Irishman plies his trade in midfield, just in front of the defence, and is influential in getting the ball forward to transition his side from defence to attack.

Coventry will be the Charlton player wearing the number 6 shirt at Fratton Park on Monday night.

The Addicks’ leading scorer is number 14, Sonny Carey.

Carey is 24-years-of-age and plays in midfield - He has so far contributed to 5 league goals this season but hasn’t found the back of the net in his last 8 appearances, last scoring a 95th minute winner against West Bromwich Albion on the 4th of November.

CURRENT FORM

Despite starting the campaign so well, Charlton now sit 17th in the Championship.

Nathan Jones’ side have managed to pick up just 4 points from their last 8 games, claiming just 1 win and 1 draw whilst suffering 6 defeats during that period.

Only rock-bottom Sheffield Wednesday have a worse record with 2 points from their last 8.

In their last outing on Boxing Day, The Addicks were beaten 1-0 by relegation zone occupiers Norwich City at Carrow Road.

Can Portsmouth end the year on a high and return to winning ways after back-to-back stalemates?

Tune in to Express FM for the final instalment of Pompey Live for 2025 this Monday (December 29th) evening from 7pm - Jake Smith will be positioned within the Fratton Park press box alongside Kirsty Roxanne and James Wilson for full coverage of this Championship clash between Portsmouth and Charlton Athletic.
