Lee Evans Signs For The Blues

Pompey have completed the signing of free agent Lee Evans.

The midfielder arrives at Fratton Park on a short-term deal until the end of the season after mutually agreeing to leave Championship high-flyers Ipswich Town at the start of February.

Evans, 29, is a Welsh international who came through the ranks at hometown club Newport County, who he helped guide to the Football League in 2013.

3 times has Lee Evans won promotion from League One to the Championship and twice under former Portsmouth managers. In 2014, Evans helped Wolverhampton Wanderers to the title under the leadership of Kenny Jackett and in the first half of the 2017/18 season, he made 23 appearances and scored 3 goals for Paul Cook's Wigan Athletic team that went on to also lift the league title, however the midfielder was recalled by Wolves midway through the campaign.

Current Blues boss John Mousinho told Portsmouth Football Club media officials in a statement: "We're delighted to welcome Lee to the club and boost our midfield options for the remainder of the campaign.

"He has plenty of Championship pedigree and experience of winning promotion out of this league, including with Ipswich last season.

"Lee is a hugely experienced footballer and is comfortable with the ball at his feet, but also a physical presence in the middle of the park."

Evans scored 6 goals in 61 appearances for his previous club, Ipswich and has been capped 4 times by Wales at senior level, making his debut in a friendly win over Trinidad & Tobago in 2019.

The signing of this midfielder likely comes following the injury sustained to Tom Lowery in Pompey's 3-1 win over Cambridge United on February 13th, leaving John Mousinho with just Marlon Pack and deadline day signing Owen Moxon as his only out-and-out central midfield options.
