Children can have fun and keep active this summer with Portsmouth City Council's Stomp for Stamps 2020
A free treasure hunt that encourages children to walk, cycle and scoot, while exploring the city.
Now in its second year, Stomp for Stamps is a great way for families to discover the city's outside spaces, from Old Portsmouth to The Mountbatten Centre. As well as getting out and about for fun, Stomp for Stamps will encourage children to get active, learn useful skills and spend quality time with family and carers.
The Pompey Monsters scheme teaches children about road safety and active travel in an interactive way. Stomp for Stamps extends this learning through to the school holidays.
Between 23 July and 4 September, four Pompey Monsters will encourage children to explore mapped areas. Guided by a map book, which can be ordered online or collected from a participating library, children will track down the Pompey Monsters who pop up four times on each route, and can be found on posts or railings. This year, to help prevent the spread of coronavirus, the council is asking children to avoid touching anything, and to photograph the monsters, using a camera or a smartphone.
Once the monsters have been photographed, children can show the images to staff at a participating library, where they will be issued with a sticker for each route completed. When at least three stickers have been collected, children can take their sticker page to a library to claim a prize - either a cuddly Stomper toy or a cool Pompey Monsters water bottle.
Cllr Lynne Stagg, Cabinet Member for Traffic and Transportation, said "Stomp for Stamps was a great success last year and it's fantastic that we can safely return with this challenge which encourages children to walk, cycle and scoot the city.
"I hope children will be energised by the experience and put the new skills they have learnt, like photography, map-reading and exploring nature, to good use during the remainder of the summer holidays and into the new term."
Participants are asked to follow government guidance to prevent the spread of coronavirus, by maintaining a safe distance from others and by regularly washing or sanitising their hands.
Stomp for Stamps map books can be ordered online at myjourneyportsmouth.com/stompforstamps2020 or can be collected from Central, Southsea or North End libraries. Prizes can be collected from libraries from 15 August.
