United Services Miss Out on FA Vase Final

Glenn Turnbull’s side unfortunately suffered the reality of a cruel penalty shoot-out defeat on Saturday afternoon, losing 4-3 on spot-kicks to Binfield.

The first-half was one way traffic in the way of the visitors, Binfield, who just couldn’t find a way through the resilient USP defence.

Glenn Turnbull’s side were persistent in their efforts to hit Binfield on the counter-attack and they were successful on the 21st minute, when James Franklyn slotted home to give the United Services the lead.

Binfield had won all 5 of their previous ties away from home in The FA Vase prior to the Semi-Final tie at the Victory Stadium but found themselves trailing at the break.

As far as possession and clear-cut chances are concerned, the visitors had the majority of those stats in their favour in the first 45 but the United Services were working hard to capitalise on the lapses in concentration at the back.

In the second-half, USP grew into the game and looked deserving of their slender advantage, having the better of chances in the opening exchanges of the second 45.

Luck was so close to being on USP’s side today, the visitors hit the post twice in quick succession on the 65th minute and had done on several occasions in the first-half, with goalkeeper Tom Price also denying Binfield a goal.

But on the 80th minute, Liam Ferdinand struck home to equalise and consequently the game went to penalties, which the visitors won 4-3.

The United Services’ incredible run comes to a cruel end, however each player and member of staff at the club can hold their heads high with pride for even reaching the Semi-Final of The FA Vase.

Jake Smith will have full reaction to this defeat on The Football Hour, this Monday (May 10th) from 6pm.
